Will this door really keep predators out, or can raccoons lift it like other automatic doors?
Unlike string-based doors that rely only on gravity, Coopr uses a direct-drive gear system that creates a self-locking mechanical seal. When closed, the gears physically interlock, making it impossible for predators to lift the door from the outside. A raccoon would need to generate over 100lbs of lift force to overcome the transmission lock—which is physically impossible for them. The door doesn't just close; it locks.
What happens if the door closes while one of my chickens is in the doorway?
Your birds' safety is our top priority. Every Coopr door features a "Soft-Touch" safety sensor that monitors resistance thousands of times per second. If the door encounters even a feather's weight while closing, it immediately stops and reverses to the open position. It then waits and gently tries again. This makes it safer than manually closing the door yourself, because the door never gets distracted or in a hurry.
Will this work in harsh winter conditions, or will it freeze shut like other doors?
Coopr is specifically engineered for extreme weather. The aircraft-grade aluminum construction won't warp or become brittle in freezing temperatures, and the high-torque motor is designed to break through ice seals that form on cold mornings. We use cold-tolerant electronic components and the direct-drive system provides enough force to power through resistance that would stall plastic doors. Both our battery and solar models have been tested in -20°F conditions.
Should I choose the battery or solar version?
Battery Model: Best for coops under trees, in shaded areas, or in northern climates with long, dark winters. Runs 6-12 months on quality AA batteries. Most reliable option for year-round operation regardless of weather. Low Battery indicator gives weeks of warning before replacement needed.
Solar Model: Perfect for coops with direct sunlight exposure. The solar panel continuously trickle-charges the internal battery, reducing maintenance to near-zero. Includes battery backup for cloudy days. Ideal for remote coops without easy access or off-grid setups.
Can't decide? Choose battery for guaranteed reliability. Choose solar if your coop gets consistent sun exposure.
How reliable is the light sensor? I've heard horror stories about doors closing too early or opening at night.
We understand the frustration with basic light sensors—we've heard the stories too. That's why Coopr uses "Smart-Light" algorithm technology that requires sustained light changes (20+ minutes) before triggering. This means passing storms, car headlights, or security lights won't fool it. You can also set delay timers (like "close 30 minutes after dusk") to give stragglers time to roost, giving you complete control over when the door operates.
I'm not handy with tools. How difficult is this to install?
Most Coopr customers complete installation in under an hour with just basic tools (drill, screwdriver). The door comes with detailed instructions, all mounting hardware, and step-by-step installation videos. You're attaching it to your existing coop opening—no complex wiring or programming required. If you can hang a picture frame, you can install a Coopr door.
Is this really worth the investment compared to just opening and closing the door myself?
Here's what you're actually buying: The ability to sleep past sunrise on weekends. The freedom to stay late at dinner without rushing home in a panic. Peace of mind knowing that even if you're sick, stuck in traffic, or simply forget, your flock is still protected. No more trudging through freezing rain at 6 AM or lying awake at 3 AM wondering if you remembered to close the door. Most Coopr customers tell us they wish they'd bought one years earlier—not for the time saved, but for the anxiety eliminated. One customer called it "cheaper than marriage counseling" because it ended the nightly arguments about whose turn it was to lock up the chickens.
